CHAPEL HILL - An online course at UNC-Chapel Hill offers opportunities for professionals who are making a career transition into public relations, or who have public relations responsibilities and are seeking to advance their education and qualifications. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Friday Center will offer "Public Relations Case Studies" in the spring and summer semesters of 2005. The course is open to all continuing education students and is designed and taught by Assistant Professor Elizabeth Dougall, whose career in public relations practice, education, and research spans three continents and almost two decades. Dougall joined the faculty in 2003.

"The course is designed for people who have limited public relations experience and who want to understand more about developing and managing effective public relations campaigns and programs," Dougall said. "The material we cover in this course is contemporary, accessible, and can quickly and easily be applied in the field."

Current case studies are the primary learning tools in this course and are used to help participants explore effective public relations management. Particular emphasis is given to crisis communication and issues management. New approaches to employee relations, community relations, media relations, and investor relations are also explored using PR cases from 'the field'.

Throughout the course, participants will review and discuss conceptual material and case examples relating to topic or theme assigned for that week. They will then discuss this material with their peers in online discussion forums. The major project is a semester-long research assignment in which participants locate a 'real-life' case from which to analyze and synthesize their own public relations case study.

Course participants must register through the Friday Center. Further information is available through www.fridaycenter.unc.edu/cco/, at (919) 962-1134 or at (800) 862-5669. The course title and code is "Case Studies in Public Relations," JOMC-131. Anyone interested is also welcome to contact Professor Dougall at (919) 962-6396.
