The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Office of University Communications seeks a Media Relations join its best-in-class Media Relations team. This is a perfect position for an experienced communications professional to be part of the overall media strategy for the nation’s first public university. Experience generating earned media and successfully crafting strategies and messages is a must. The Manager plays a pivotal role in developing messages and strategies on a wide range of higher education topics and issues and provides direct responses and pitches to local, regional and national outlets.

Reporting to the Director of Media Relations, this position is responsible for successfully planning, executing and evaluating a strategic media relations plan for a portfolio of areas and promoting Carolina’s mission and work as a leading global research university. This Manager's portfolio covers Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Schools of Journalism, Law, and Government, among others. As part of those duties, the Manager will develop strategies to position Carolina as a world-class research institution and communicate in plain language across content platforms.

The Manager will have a detailed working knowledge of issues and trends in higher education. This position maintains strong working relationships with subject matter experts across campus, including senior leaders, department heads, faculty and communicators. The Manager develops and maintains relationships with journalists at media outlets to help smoothly communicate often complex issues and to pitch story ideas and experts. In addition, the Manager is expected to support other activities in the Office of University Communications as needed.

The Manager will work closely with communications professionals across campus to provide strategic consultation and direction on media relations initiatives. Under the director's leadership, the Media Relations Team creates the messages, content and pitches that promote the University, its people and programs. Someone who has a fresh approach to media relations and creative content is welcome.

The Office of University Communications is currently operating under a flexible work arrangements program. This position may be eligible to participate in the program, which includes a hybrid of on-campus and remote work, based on the hiring unit’s business needs.
