Self-Help is seeking a PR & Media Relations Associate to join our team. The PR & Media Relations Associate will support the Director of Media Relations in a variety of media outreach activities, including but not limited to: writing press materials and other collaterals; pitching stories; tracking trends, conducting research, promoting subject matter expertise; and identifying and promoting stories that align with the Self-Help’s strategic priorities and overall goals. The Associate works with reporters, editors, bloggers, and other media representatives to attain news coverage and develop and broaden media relationships. The associate monitors the news media for story ideas and opportunities to position Self-Help Credit Union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union, and Self-Help Ventures Fund as expert news sources and supports the department’s media monitoring and reporting efforts. Collaborates with internal staff on media relations efforts.

The associate also manages social media creation and uses other multi-media platforms to improve our online presence, produce good content, promote Self-Help stories, events and subject matter experts and help develop strategies to promote Self-Help events, and programs. This role is also responsible for analyzing usage data, facilitating, collaborating, and managing social media projects and campaigns, and making updates through all of Self-Help’s social media channels. This role will also sometimes contribute content to the Self-Help websites and blog and will monitor website and blog content with a PR/media lens.

Credentials, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Marketing or other related field OR equivalent related experience.

3-years of experience working with public relations and media.
PRSA membership with APR status is preferred.

Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.

Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and a high level of collaboration.

Excellent written and oral communications skills; strong copy writing and editing skills. Comfort with writing press releases.

Strong understanding of public relations and media communication. PR/Media experience with nonprofits a plus.

Good planning and project management skills as well as the ability to effectively multi-task.

Excellent organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
