The Public Relations Manager is responsible for managing Butterball’s reputation and year-round earned media activities with the assistance of outside PR agency efforts, supporting communications process for crises, and assisting senior leadership in the development of annual communications plans consistent with the overall strategic plan. The primary role of the Public Relations Manager is to enhance and defend the company’s reputation among various constituencies including, but not limited to, traditional, social and trade media, customers, consumers, local communities, partners, vendors, team members and ownership. This position will attend local industry and community events that enhance the company and brand reputation.

Essential Functions:

Public Relations
Ownership and management of total PR budget, inclusive of product donations and corporate giving opportunities
Direct PR agency of record and any third-party contractors to execute a comprehensive external communications plan as laid out in strategic plan
Provide public relations support for brand, plant and corporate activities
Maintain updated press materials such as team member bios, head shots, fact sheets, etc.
Draft or work with agency to draft news releases, media advisories, pitches, bylined articles and other content to support product publicity and corporate communications efforts
Serve as Butterball spokesperson and coordinate media training for appropriate company representatives
Monitor media coverage of Butterball and stay abreast of industry trends and news
Assist Director and senior leadership in development of strategic PR planning with agency

Community Relations
Work closely with Butterball plant representatives to identify potential opportunities to gain publicity at a local level
Provide support for Butterball-related events where media is involved
Facilitate corporate giving programs and product donations and engage production facilities for localized giving opportunities

Crisis Communications
Work with Director and AOR to update and maintain Butterball’s crisis communications manual
Draft necessary reactive communications such as media statements, Q&As, social media responses, customer letters, and internal communication

Corporate Communications
Ensure internal communications content is consistent with external content and consistent across all departments and facilities
Facilitate writing, review and publishing of public-facing annual corporate social responsibility report in accordance with GRI core reporting standards

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:
Must have ability to write clear, compelling and concise media materials and develop pitches with timely news angles
Must engage with social and traditional media via email, telephone, social media or in-person meetings to effectively pitch stories and cultivate relationships
Ability to work well individually or in a team environment
Proficiency with AP style
Ability to create PR goals that integrate with overall company strategy and goals
Ability to evaluate, recommend and manage relationships with external agencies and vendors
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat

Education and Experience
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or related field
Candidate should have at least five years of experience in a public relations, communications, journalism or similar role
