Reporting to the Director of Media Relations, and working with colleagues in the Office of University Communications and communications professionals within the schools and units within the University, the Media Relations Manager serves as an initial point of contact for representatives of the news media.
The Media Relations Manager will own a portfolio that covers the University’s research, particularly health and science. As part of that, s/he will develop strategies to leverage the University’s work to position the University as a world-class research institution and will have the ability to communicate about research in plain language across content platforms. The Media Relations Manager maintains strong working relationships with subject matter experts across the campus, including, but not limited to, senior university leaders, faculty and communicators. The Media Relations Manager develops and maintains relationships with science journalists at media outlets to help ensure smooth communication of often complex issues to ensure the ability to engage the journalists with story ideas and expert recommendations.
The Media Relations Manager will have a detailed working knowledge of issues and trends in the areas of research, technology, science and health as well as a general knowledge of University policy and operations. In addition to initiatives related to these areas, s/he is expected to provide support for other activities in the office of University Communications as needed.
