Senior Director, Media Relations

UNC-Chapel Hill’s Office of University Communications is seeking a Senior Director of Media Relations to lead its Media Relations team. This is a perfect position for a highly seasoned, senior level communications professional who wants to direct a key part of the communications strategy and response for the nation’s first public university. A demonstrated history of creating a strategy and leading a team to promote the research and scholarship of the University to local, national and global audiences is critical. A deep knowledge of news cycles and how to craft strategies and messages are musts, as well as proven experience effectively and compassionately managing a high-functioning team in a fast-paced environment. This position plays a pivotal role in developing messages, stories and strategies for the University’s communications on a wide range of topics and issues in higher education. This leader also provides senior executive counsel directly to top leaders in the administration and around the University.

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Strategic Communications, the Senior Director of Media Relations is a senior leader on the University’s communications team, which works to set the culture and operational decisions of the department. They are responsible for successfully planning, executing and evaluating a comprehensive strategic media relations program that promotes Carolina’s mission and work as a leading global research university. The Senior Director plans for and develops efficient and time-sensitive processes to effectively manage the daily operations of the University’s media relations team of seven highly skilled staff members. At the same time, this person works closely with communications professionals across the full breadth of the campus community to provide high-level strategic consultation and direction on media relations initiatives. Under the leadership of the Senior Director, the media relations team creates the messages, content and pitches that promote the University, its people and programs.
