Public Information Officer
Performs professional work developing internal and external communications, coordinating media and citizen relations, preparing news releases, media kits, speech materials, calendars, brochures and informational documents; related work as apparent or other duties as assigned by Administration. Work is performed under the general direction of the City Manager.
Successful applicant establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with local media, elected officials, and City department heads. Works with Public Safety agencies to keep the public informed during times of disaster or crisis. Writes, edits, photographs, prepares graphic design, and distributes information across multiple communication platforms including social media, the City’s website, public presentation, and print-ready press releases. Acts as primary media spokesperson for the City, which includes on-air, print, and digital outlets. Responds to inquiries, public record requests, and complex issues from City management exhibiting extraordinary professionalism, communication, and customer service techniques. Must have thorough knowledge of public relations and communications methodologies for disseminating information and publicizing programs, projects, events, services and issues. Must have knowledge of laws and policies governing the release of confidential and sensitive information, and able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Have ability to write and edit materials for publication and gather relevant information to resolve vaguely defined practical problems. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the media, the public, City employees and other public and private agencies. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Excellent benefit package.
Graduate Degree in Mass Communication or a related field is preferred, coursework in marketing, communications, public relations or related field and considerable experience in public relation practices, digital communications, press communications, graphic design, website best practices. Minimum of five years’ experience as a public information officer, journalist, broadcast specialist, or other related field preferred. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Salary range: $52,410 – $60780. Excellent benefit package.
