Public Relations Manager

Hybrid (virtual and in person) opportunity available.  Assigned Service Centers are located in Asheville, Gastonia, Greensboro or Hickory, North Carolina.

 Summary: 

The Public Relations Manager is responsible for specific marketing activities to expand the visibility and understanding of the Girl Scout mission and values. Their primary focus is coordinating all public relations activities, developing a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget, and tactics and developing a media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast and online media.

What you will do:

  • In collaboration with the marketing team and council leadership, develop council marketing communications plan and processes for increasing engagement with our audiences and stakeholders and increase visibility and understanding of the Girl Scout mission and programming, benefits for girl members and the need for adult volunteers.
  • Coordinate all public relations activities for the council.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with media outlets to foster the best public image for the council. Serve as a spokesperson for the council as needed.
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests.
  • Create content for press releases, byline articles and keynote presentations.
  • Monitor, analyze and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis.
  • Evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships and advertising on an on-going basis.
  • Build relationships with thought leaders to grow brand awareness.
  • Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends affecting customers and make appropriate recommendations regarding communication strategy surrounding them.
  • Create, launch and manage council written and digital communications.
  • Manage the GSCP2P Media Girls program.
  • Serve as liaison to our council’s communications consultant(s).
  • Monitor and moderate the GSCP2P Events Facebook Group and other council-owned social pages and groups.
  • Engage cross-functionally with teammates to fully support annual council membership recruitment and retention plans.
  • Identify opportunities in the council where Girl Scouts can partner with other agencies, organizations, and social media outlets to expand the reach of our current marketing strategies.
  • Participate actively in developing environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion and access through words, actions, and attitude. Ensure work plans are designed to enhance the diversity of our membership.
  • Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, non-profit management, leadership or related field or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Proficient in marketing cloud technology and social media technology, including blogs, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Power Point, Word and Excel.
  • Experience and comfort with data-driven decision-making.
  • Ambition, drive and sense of urgency to achieve goals.
  • Strong verbal skills with an ability to present to a variety of audiences with confidence and clarity.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills; Proven experience with quality control with regard to proof reading and successful creation of high-quality materials.
  • Comfort and ability to present to audiences of a variety of sizes and demographics.
  • Experience in acting as a company spokesperson and comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews preferable.
  • Willingness and ability to work regular and varied hours.
  • Knowledge and utilization of various marketing campaigns and networks (flyers, radio, billboards, social media, etc.).
  • Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns.
  • Customer relations experience and a demonstrated commitment to maintaining a high customer service focus for all internal and external customers (staff, volunteers, families).
  • Excellent problem solving and trouble-shooting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in person, by phone and in writing by email with prospective members, parents/guardians, volunteers and colleagues.
  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently in stressful situations; excellent customer service skills; detail and deadline oriented; self-sufficient.

What else do you need:

  • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become and remain a registered member of GSUSA, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.
  • Successfully pass criminal and driver background investigation.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license, valid auto insurance, acceptable driving record and access to a vehicle on a daily basis and willingness and ability to travel throughout the council’s geographic area.
